Reducing Poverty in Washington, D.C. and Rebuilding the Middle Class from Within The Greater Washington Research Center was established through the consolidation of the Washington Center for Metropolitan Studies (est. 1960) and the D.C. During its 39 years of existence, the Research Center has engaged continuously in policy-oriented research and in data collection and analysis designed to help local businesses, non-profit organizations, and governments. From the beginning, it has focused the bulk of its attention on the area's changing economy, population change, labor force characteristics, social conditions, physical development needs, and public policy issues. In recent years, the Center has published major papers on chronic poverty in the Washington area and strategies for its reduction through employment.
